Promoted at work

I got promoted. Here's my story.

Promoted at work

I got promoted at work. So here is review of the past 9 months.

For the past 6 months, my job title was "Junior Developer". Today, I get promoted to "Backend Developer".

Some might argue that it's not that big of a title change. But it's my first job so stfu.

I must say, I have learnt a lot in the past 6 months and the 3 months prior of being an intern. Having working at Javaabu Pvt. Ltd. has been the best first job experience I’ve had. I wasn’t really much of a developer before. All I used to do was mess around with programming languages, acting like I knew anything I was doing. Making small scripts using Python so that I’d get a message to my phone whenever a download was complete. It was super messy code back then. Now, I’ve written the whole thing all over again, used more efficient methods of coding and ended up with exactly a 100 lines of code. It used to be over 300 lines.

I never had any backend systems development experience. Ever since I’ve joined Javaabu, I’ve been dealing with a lot of backend projects. I first started out with writing system requirement specifications for each of the projects that were going on. I’d go to meetings where we discussed on how the system should work, and then I’d come back to the office and start writing up a comprehensive document on how the website should be built for the client. The document I write would be the document the actual developer would refer to when building the system.

I then graduated to making WordPress website. Much like this very website. I had to deal with 2 clients on my own to get their website looking exactly how they want it to be. That was around 3 months of work. At first, it was very exciting. But then things started to become boring as I was doing the same thing every single day.

August 2018 was when I got my first real job as a developer at work. I was assigned to make the IUM Student Information Management System (ISISM). I had gone to the first few meetings to figure out how they want that system to be developed, but I ended up getting sick and couldn’t attend any of the proceeding meetings. The day I came back to work, I was told to start with the development of the project.

It’s been 3 months since I’ve started with the development, and I have learnt many things along the way. Handling a large scale project on my own has enabled me to learn at a much faster rate. Trying to implement functionality that is needed is when I learn the most. I read up on the documentation for the framework we use at work, and then figure out how to build the code. I can say with my current skill level, I could build my own blog from scratch within a week or so.

All is well…
